Volume 4 – March 2007

	Thanks to our outstanding volunteer force, World Community Grid has made great progress since our last newsletter! We would like to thank you for your continuing participation in our mission to create the world's largest public computing grid. With this grid, we've been able to tackle projects that benefit humanity. Through this newsletter, we will keep you informed of the latest accomplishments, updates on active research, and site enhancements. Research Update Since World Community Grid's launch in November 2004, more than 500,000 devices have been registered. The computer power that our volunteer community has donated equals one PC running nonstop for more than 76,000 years, an average of 1,000 years a week! World Community Grid's sheer power would rank it among the top five super computers in the world, allowing researchers to shave years, if not decades, off the time it would have taken to run their research on available computers.   As a result, World Community is now able to run five projects simultaneously, making World Community Grid the only public grid to achieve this milestone. Thank you for the computing resources that you provide to make this possible.  [read more] Marist College Project In the Spring 2006, IBM and Marist College, located in Poughkeepsie, New York, embarked on its second year of a special project. Twenty students from Professor Mark Van Dyke's communication capping course were given the task to promote World Community Grid. The students divided into four teams to formulate quantitative and qualitative goals and objectives designed to increase awareness of World Community Grid, and in turn, increase the number of members and devices registered on the Marist College team.   [read more] Partner Interview: Welcon-Line World Community Grid's partners play a critical role in building the volunteer base that fuels humanitarian research. One great example is Welcon-Line, a small Russian internet service provider that has signed up almost 700 volunteers wishing to donate their spare computing capacity to fight aids. The resulting 900 devices that are now part of World Community Grid have already contributed the equivalent of 205 years of run time. Welcon-Line has achieved this despite the fact that the company, which started in 2002, employs only 30 people.   [read more] Technical Tips: BOINC Agent Simplified World Community Grid and BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), an open-source software platform for distributed computing using volunteered resources, have worked together to create an exciting new version of the BOINC agent. World Community Grid has supported the use of the BOINC software for grid computing since November 2005. World Community Grid is a major contributor to the open source development community that supports BOINC and helps to extend the reach of distributed computing for research. BOINC also allows us to support Linux and Mac users on World Community Grid. This new version of the agent contains a number of features to make it easy and fun to use.
